Workshop Announcement

Workshop on
Integration of Design-by-Features and Automatic Feature Recognition
in an open CAD Framework

Place:
Fraunhofer IGD, Wilhelminenstrasse 7, 64283 Darmstadt, Germany
Seminar Room 1
Date:
Wednesday, 3rd July 1996, from 9.00 to 17.00

Scope and Goal

The idea that many important design tasks and industrial applications could be performed with the help of CAD systems has led to the development of several geometric modeling techniques. Recently, much attention is given to feature-based modeling which aims to capture the semantics of the parts together with the geometric information in the product model, providing the user with high level modeling entities and supporting intuitive design process.

Feature-based modeling has the potential to improve the quality of the design, to speed up the design process, to reduce the costs and to shorten the time to market. It is promising for concurrent engineering since with features it is possible to link the different phases of the product life cycle, such as design, process plann and manufacturing.

The goal of this workshop is to present the final results obtained within the European HCM project on Integration of Design by Features and Automatic Feature Recognition in an open CAD Framework carried out in co-operation between the Fraunhofer Institut fr Graphische Datenverarbeitung (IGD) in Darmstadt, Germany, and the Istituto per la Matematica Applicata del CNR (IMA) in Genova, Italy. This workshop aims to show a new approach to feature-based modeling, which integrates the two most important approaches to feature modeling, namely design-by-features and feature recognition, and to promote a process of technology transfer to industry providing a forum for discussions among researchers, CAD vendors and end users.

Topics

This workshop will focus on both research and industrial application aspects of current feature-based technology. Main topics will include:

Research:

- Feature-based Modeling
- Product Modeling
- Parametric and Variational Design
- Open CAD Environment

Industrial Applications:

- CAD/CAM/CIM Systems
- Rapid Prototyping
- Virtual Prototyping
- Concurrent Engineering

Location

The workshop will be held at the
Fraunhofer Institut fr Graphische Datenveravbeitung,
Wilhelminenstrasse 7, D-64283 Darmstadt, Germany.

The place can be easily reached:
- from the Frankfurt Airport: the Airliner provides a bus transfer every half an hour from bus stop 14, outside the arrival level of the Frankfurt Airport, to Luisenplatz in Darmstadt (last stop) which is two minutes by foot from the institute

- from the central station: bus D or F , bus stop Luisenplatz

- from the highway: (A5, A67) "Autobahnkreuz Darmstadt", exit "Darmstadt Stadtmitte" and then straight ahead until city tunnel (city ring)

Registration

A nominal participation fee covering the workshop expenses (material, refreshments, copying, etc.) is fixed to 180 DM, payable preferably by bank transfer to Fraunhofer IGD, Deutsche Bank Darmstadt, BLZ 508 70005, account n. 104 208, referencing the participation to the Feature Workshop.
