Management of the DFKI the Open Source Framework
www.gnowsis.org is developed.

build on top of this framework.
The gnowsis framework is capable of representing all information a person has in a standardised data format, the Resource Description Framework, queryable and usable for many different applications. A problem in the framework, is that all metadata has to be extracted from the different applications and the extraction process is slow and a performance bottleneck.
Many systems in the field (google desktop, x-friend, gnome beagle, iTunes, ...) are based on the principle of extracting metadata and storing them in a fulltext index. The diploma thesis consists of analysing the different approaches in the field and reading the relevant scientific articles. The gnowsis system of the DFKI already has a search function based on Semantic Web technology. You should extend the indexing, buffering and search functionality of gnowsis to the current possibilities of the mentioned desktop search engines. You will write a standard for this.

Your prerequisites are
- web experience (you have a homepage or created some web content)
- Basic knowledge about Semantic Web
- Java & XML experience
- english in word and writing
