There is a bulk of projects aiming at establishing DL for a
specific domain (such as "cuneiform tablets", cf. cdli). I have omitted this
type of projects for the list.
DL Project @ University of
California at Berkeley
Technologies: Image retrieval, new document models, document image
analysis, robust references, distributed search, NLP for info access
Personal Collection Management Service;
DL Project @ Cornell
University
Information integrity in distributed DLs, topics: long term
survivabilty of information in digital
form, predictable availability of
information resources and services, interoperability,
security, metadata -structured information that makes it
possible to ensure information integrity in digital libraries
Indiana University Music
Library Project
The Variations2 project aims to establish a digital music library
testbed system containing music in a variety of formats, involving
research and development in the areas of system architecture, metadata
standards, component-based application architecture, and network
services.

My conclusion (LvE): There is a remarkable
portion of well-known (AI, Retrieval, Agent,...) people being
funded by DL projects without talking about DL in the communities where
I got to know them.
"Beyond classical
digital libraries". Hermann Maurer, Graz University
2001 Paper from the Hyperwave guy. Here's the conclusions section: "It
is clear that digital libraries will play an important role in our
information society, or as we would prefer to call it, knowledge
society. All attempts to foster the growth of digital libraries should
hence be encouraged. To make them as powerful as they can be,
interchange standards for documents and metadata have to be firmed up.
Also, and this is the intended message of this paper, digital libraries
should not just be seen as static information repositories but as
growing, interactively, and collaboratively used nucleus of what will
be, at some stage, a good part of human knowledge that depends as much
on information as on communication. A number of features mentioned in
this direction in this paper have been successfully tried out and are
in practical use."
