A SHORT INTRODUCTION OF MYSELF

I am researcher and postgraduate at the Knowledge Management Department, DFKI. My research is about Ontology-Based Information Extraction (OBIE). All my research is implemented in an OBIE system called iDocument. I am father of two lovely kids.

ONTOLOGY-BASED INFORMATION EXTRACTION

Ontologie-based information extraction (OBIE) is the use of an ontology scheme and instance base in information extraction tasks. My reasearch in this field focusses on developing an OBIE system with following functionalities that uses RDF as knowledge representation format:

• Adaptablity:
  By exchanging domain ontologies and instance bases, the OBIE system should adapt on those domains that are modelled in these.
• Query-ability:
  The existence of an RDF graph, allows to specify SPARQL queries. In information extraction, these SPARQL queries can be used to specify the users information demand, that means the kind of information (e.g., which classes or facts) the user wants to extract from text.
• Extraction-ability:
  The OBIE system should extract information in the same vocabulary as the the domain ontology is written in.
• Annotation-ability:
  The OBIE system can annotate unstructured text with instance knowledge from the domain ontology.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

These are research topics, that I'm interested in.

• Information Extraction
  Information Extraction extracts structured information from unstructured text.
• Semantic Annotation
  My oppinion is that annotating unstructured text with structured information (e.g., from ontologies) is the inverse of information extraction.
• Semantic Web
  I am intersted in using RDF, RDFS, and OWL for incorporating background knowledge into Information Extraction systems
• Semantic Desktop
  I think the Semantic Deskotp is an ideal application to integrate OBIE functionalities. Me and some collegues extended the Nepomuk Social Semantic Desktop with functionalities from iDocument. The resulting plugin can be downloaded here
