Project Overview

The goal of Perspecting is to develop and investigate knowledge-based technologies for personal, continuous knowledge acquisition.
The made-up word "Perspecting" indicates the two types of processes we focus on:

  • Prospecting for Information
    • i.e., finding valuable information (e.g., by searching the web or personal collections)
    • supporting complete information seeking processes
    • integrating new knowledge into one's personal body of knowledge
  • Building Perspectives on Information
    • obtaining goal- and situation-oriented interpretations of information items

More technically, Perspecting is rooted in three core research areas:

  • Information Retrieval: We aim at long-term usage of user attention data for personalized search
  • Information Extraction: We aim at exploiting attention data for ontology-based IE.
  • Knowledge Representation: We aim at formal representations of information seeking episodes for re-use of search experience.
Project Context

Perspecting  is the latest in a series of projects investigating IT support for personal and organizational Knowledge Management:

  • In Knowmore (1997-1999), we developed our concept of Organizational Memories (OMs) as enterprise information infrastructures that provide active, context-sensitive knowledge delivery.
  • FRODO (2000-2002) extended Knowmore's view towards Distributed Organizational Memories which don't rely so much on centralized structures, but allowed for evolutionary buildup of and co-operation between several smaller OMs.
  • In EPOS (2003-2005), we concentrated on the knowledge worker's perspective by investigating how effort in personal knowledge management can be optimized for his own benefit as well as for improving the Organizaional Memory.
  • Mymory (2006-2008) investigated the utilization of attention data for more precise information delivery and employed technologies for unobtrusive user observation in order to create relations between information items that are meaningful to the user in his specific context.
Project Duration

The project started on Jan 1, 2009 and is expected to finish on Dec 31, 2011

Perspecting is funded by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (Federal Ministry of Education and Research) under grant 01IW08002.
