Information retrieval maps information need descriptions to knowledge item descriptions
[vanRijsbergen89] identified the three basic constituents of intelligent information retrieval:
- a semantic representation of documents
- a semantic representation of queries
- an inference procedure mapping the latter one onto the former ones
